Hale 500 LTD Series Bookcase Specification

    General Construction:

Hale 500 LTD SeriesAll wood used in the construction of parts and shelving will be kiln-dried hardwood containing moisture content of 5% - 7% at the time of fabrication.  All woods will be selected for uniformity of grain and color. Wood used for internal parts will be selected to be structurally sound.

Ends are secured to the top by “lock-joint” tennon and plough securely glued.  In addition, heavy gauge 1 x 1 x ¾” angle brackets are recessed into top and ends on the inside of the case 1” from the front.  Ends are secured to the bottom-base front by glued in tennon and plough with the bottom shelf toe-nailed to the ends from the bottom inside, plus glue blocks.  Backs are flush mounted to rabbeted top, ends and bottom by ¾” coated staples.  All size cases are equipped with metal adjustable glides on front corners.  Four nylon, ¾” high, glides are used in manufacturing and transit to prevent bottom edges from damage.  Glides can be left on, but should be removed.

    Wood Finishes:

In the manufacturing process, hardwood parts are glued, cut to size, machine and finish sanded on a 2-head wide belt-finishing sander.  Hardwood veneer end panels are finish sanded on a Heesman automatic veneer panel sander.  Finish sanding of veneer panels and hardwood parts include the use of 100, 120, and 150 grit-sanding belts.

After parts are assembled into a freestanding unit, final hand sanding and inspection prepared the unit for the first finishing step.  The selected color finish is hand applied and cloth wiped to provide a uniform color.

One coat of sealer is applied with an airless sprayer and allowed to cure.  After curing, the sealer is sanded with 220 grit sandpaper to provide a uniform smooth surface.

A final lacquer topcoat is applied with an airless sprayer and cured in a heated drying room.  The topcoat dries smooth to approximately a 30-sheen finish, which is resistant to normal wear and scratching.

    Unit Description:

Modern design of 1” thick panels with no overhanging edges for neat end-to-end or back-to-back groupings.  Flush closed base offers the most complete footing for self-standing cases.  There are adjustable shelves.  Each shelf is supported by four die cast metal shelf supports that are inserted into holes spaced one inch apart along the height.  One shelf is screwed to the shelf supports to add rigidity to 60”, 72”, and 84” high.  That shelf can be relocated by removing four wood screws.  Front edges of the cases are bull nosed (D Profile) with corners mitered.  Cases are shipped completely set up ready for use except for the placement of the adjustable shelves.

    Materials:

Ends, bottoms and top three ply Novoply, industrial grade 45 lb. flakecore plywood or equivalent with both faces walnut, birch, or oak wood veneered with a solid ¼” walnut, oak or birch lumber band “D” moulded edge. Base Front is solid ¾” thick lumber thoroughly air and kiln dried.  Shelves are solid hardwood lumber finished full 7/8” thick.  The complete shelf is faced with a walnut, birch or oak veneer..  Installed shelving is guaranteed to support 200 pounds without bow, sag or twist.  Shelving is tested up to 225 pounds even distribution without deformation. The ¼” thick solid hardwood bull nose front edge comes in birch, walnut or oak to match the bookcase.  Backs are ¼” masonite hard board with the inside face custom printed to match the finish or optionally, a ¼” thick plywood back panel or genuine walnut, oak, or birch veneered panels finished one or both sides are available at an up-charge.
